If art is a casualty of war, then Butoh (舞踏, Butō) would have been the spark, which flickers and glows, creating the movement of new life, rising from the ruins of the spirit of avant-garde and forever refusing to fade into oblivion.
Over 4 days in January 2025, Hong Kong will witness an unprecedented congress of Butoh dancing at the new Sotheby’s Maison, an initiative and partnership between Sotheby’s, the Xevarion Institute and the School of Creative Media, City University HK.
We are delighted to have legendary Butoh dancers Tadashi Endo, Ima Tenko, Yasuo Fukurozaka, Masami Yurabe with Miwako Inagaki, Yuri Nagaoka and Seisaku to participate in this festival. 3-nights live performances at the Sotheby’s Grotto will take place during the festival period with historical artefacts, photographic, cinematographic and sculptural remnants / memento mori displayed to the Hong Kong public for the first time, in association with the Hijikata Tatsumi Archive at the Keio University (Tokyo), curated by Takashi Morishita.
假如藝術能表達戰爭的創傷，那麼舞踏(Butō)就是重新燃起這些被粉碎遺忘的意志的星星之火，散發著燎原的生命之力。
2025年1月，蘇富比、The Xevarion Insitute聯同香港城市大學創意媒體學院為大家舉行一次史無前例的舞踏盛宴，邀請了七位日本傳奇舞踏家遠藤公義、今貂子、袋坂ヤスオ、由良部正美與稲垣美輪子、正朔，以及長岡優理越洋來港一連四日在蘇富比旗艦畫廊的展覽和舞踏表演。除了六場舞踏演出外，蘇富比旗艦畫廊亦會展出兩件由日本慶應義塾大學土方巽資料收藏館特別借出的珍貴歷史收藏品。

The festival will kick off at the School of Creative Media (CityU HK) where film screening of significant archival materials will accompany the artists’ symposium chaired by professor Damien Charrieras.
是次舞踏節將會在香港城市大學創意媒體學院掀開序幕，由Damien Charrieras教授主持的舞踏講座，率先與舞踏家們見面，同場亦有難得一見的舞踏歷史影片放映。

舞踏の冬去春來 - 土方巽有形物質文化遺產展
Butoh’s significance extends beyond its historical context, offering profound insights into themes of renewal, reconnection, and the human-nature relationship. The art form emphasizes the body’s potential (power) to transform, reflecting cycles of life, death, and rebirth. This focus on transformation resonates deeply with contemporary audiences, particularly in the context of environmental and societal challenges. The exhibits, drawn from the great depth of the Hijikata Tatsumi archive, absorb the artificial lights that define this city, through the traces of such unique movements by the founder of Butoh, reflect and project to us Hong Kong’s own history of busy forgetting, but not forgotten, beauty and aspirations.
舞踏的影響已遠遠超越它在日本的歷史文化層面，更多的是揭開潛藏在心靈深處，屬於「人」本性的存在。有別一般西方美的肢體表達，舞踏以其獨特的表現形式，無論在造型上、佈置上與身體語言上，給予觀眾對周遭事物與自我的另類反思。是次展覽由日本慶應義塾大學舞踏研究學者森下隆先生從土方巽資料收藏館精挑細選出一系列有關舞踏始創人土方巽在不同創作時期留下來的第一手資料，近距離認識這別樹一格的舞蹈的背後故事。
